Working On My Fitness

January is an odd month, a sudden stop to the hectic December. My body feels this too, what with the overindulgence that comes with Christmas and New Year. So I want to do something about it, but I 100% HATE the gym. It’s expensive and for me very boring. I end up listening to a couple of tunes then think, surely I’m done? – But it’s only been 5 minutes. Or, I try to watch TV and notice myself slowing to a stop – I am now only watching the TV, I may as well be at home. I have learnt that for me personally, I need more motivation to stick at exercise. I need an actual person, and where else can you get yourself a free personal trainer, than YouTube.

Here I found two amazing women. The first, Adrienne Mishler, who’s YouTube channel Yoga with Adrienne allowed me to find a form of exercise that I absolutely fell in love with. Yoga has not only helped me physically but mentally as well. It is an amazing feeling in this day and age to be able to switch off from everything that’s going on in your head, and become fully immersed in you. As Adrienne says: “Find what feels good.”

Adrienne as a teacher is incredible. She’s sweet, funny, motivational, knows exactly what she’s talking about, and her Texan drawl is so calming – exactly what you need in a yoga teacher. Her videos are easy to follow and focus more on mindful breathing and healing stretches, than hitting perfect poses. She can pull out some insane moves (just check out the crow pose!) but she also makes you feel ok if you can’t quite do them. Stick at it, and maybe one day you can – I’m hoping to because, party trick anyone?!

 

 

What’s perfect for this time of year is she does her 30 days of yoga challenge, this year it’s called TRUE. It’s a completely free programme, just head to her channel. You can also sign up to receive motivational emails each morning and a calendar of what to expect each day on www.ywatrue.com. The sessions are only around 30 minutes long, so are ideal when you’ve got a lot on. They also build up difficulty gradually each time, great for anyone just starting out.

Oh and don’t forget to look out for Benji, her adorable pupper that makes the odd appearance – he’ll show you how to do the perfect downward dog!

 

 

The second is Cassey Ho who runs the channel, Blogilates. These workouts are a lot more active than Adrienne’s as they’re cardio based. You will be sweating and breathing hard by the end of it (if you’re as unfit as me anyway – Cassey herself looks as beautiful as ever).

Cassey has come up with a style of exercise known as POP Pilates. It combines pilates moves, to tone, with cardio ones, to burn fat. Put to a dance soundtrack, these 30-minute workouts feel like you’re dancing rather than exercising, much more fun to me. She also does PIIT 28 workouts (Pilates Intense Interval Training), which consist of doing reps for 45 seconds, then resting for 15 seconds and so on for 28 minutes.

 

 

She’s crazy, cute and bubbly, encouraging you to smile through the pain and think about everything you want to achieve. She believes working out should be more than just a goal to lose weight but a time where you can have fun. That way it is more likely to become part of your lifestyle.

Cassey also has a January programme called 28-Day Reset. This encourages you to cut out foods containing dairy, gluten, added sugar, processed foods and alcohol. Which all makes sense, she’s basically encouraging you to eat healthy. As well as doing one of her 30-minute exercise videos once a day for 6 days of the week. This should kick start your year and you can slowly re-introduce the banned foods – if you even want to at this point.

 

 

The best part is most of her workouts are equipment and noise free, so you won’t have anyone complaining that you’re going to jump your way through their ceiling.

So there you have it, these two women have managed to do the impossible. Despite being on the other side of the world, they have got me to ENJOY exercise. Which means they’re definitely worth a try. Whether you’re a gym-phobe like me, want a quick fix each day or simply want to try something new, clear yourself a space and head to YouTube, these women are the ultimate in #girlboss.

    Fitness is one thing I want to work on this year! I also watch Casey Ho and her workouts, they’re really great 🙂
